Types and Properties of Hydraulic Oil

Modern hydraulic oils are developed with key characteristics in mind, such as low-temperature stability and viscosity. Viscosity is an important indicator for proper system operation, as it affects movement speed and lubrication efficiency in equipment components.

Viscosity grades ISO VG and their applications:

• ISO VG 32 — used at temperatures down to -20°C. Suitable for construction equipment and forklifts.

• ISO VG 46 — used at temperatures down to -15°C. Applied in machine tools, hydraulic presses, and other industrial equipment.

• ISO VG 68 — used at temperatures down to -10°C. Recommended for hydraulic systems operating in warm indoor environments.

• ISO VG 100 — used at temperatures down to -5°C. Applied in heavy-duty hydraulic systems, industrial equipment, and heavy presses.

Low-viscosity oil can lead to increased operational losses, poorer lubrication, and even cause fatigue wear of working components. On the other hand, high-viscosity oil may create difficulties in low-temperature operation, increase mechanical losses, and cause additional resistance.

Modern hydraulic systems use oils that comply with ISO VG standards, which indicate the oil viscosity level at 40°C. This allows precise oil selection depending on operating conditions and equipment requirements.

Modern Standards and Environmental Requirements

With the development of technology, hydraulic oil manufacturers follow international standards such as DIN 51524, ISO 6743, and SAE J300. In addition, environmental requirements are becoming stricter: biodegradable oils are increasingly in demand, especially in industries where environmental safety is a priority.

It is also important to remember that mixing oils from different manufacturers or with different additive types can negatively affect system performance. If you need to replace oil, be sure to thoroughly clean the hydraulic tank and other system components.
